40 Rare and Mysterious Animal Species That Few Have Seen
Rare and mysterious animal species are precious and valuable animals that may only exist in a very small area or have a very low population. Some of these species have been known and studied, while others are still very little known.
One of the rarest animals in the world is the Tamaraw. This is a small black-footed buffalo, with only 300 individuals remaining on the island of Mindoro in the Philippines. These Tamaraws are threatened by the decline of their habitat and are hunted for their horns.
Other animal species are also facing similar challenges, such as the Saola, a swamp deer species with unique curved horns. There are only about 750 Saolas left in the world, and they only live in the northern mountain forests of Vietnam and Laos.
Another noteworthy animal species is the Okapi, a horse-like animal with spotted fur and long cylindrical horns. They only live in the Congo rainforest of Africa, and are considered the national symbol of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Another very rare and little-known species is the Pangolin. This is a scaly animal species that lives in caves and forests of Africa and Asia. Pangolin is considered the most valuable scaly animal species in the world, and they are hunted for their scales to be used in traditional Chinese medicine and Eastern medicine.
In addition, there are many other rare animal species that are facing threats from humans such as the Hoa Moc Lan pheasant, black-faced spoonbill, long-tailed weasel, river turtle, Javan rhinoceros, and many others.
