When he was 4 years old, Djokovic started playing tennis. In the summer of 1993, Djokovic was only six years old. When she saw Djokovic play tennis, Yugoslavian tennis player Jelena Genčić discovered Djokovic’s natural talent and declared: “This is the greatest talent I have seen since Monica Seles”.

Genčić became Djokovic’s tennis teacher for six years and realized that Djokovic needed to go abroad to develop his career. Genčić then contacted Nikola Pilić to transfer the boy to Pilić’s tennis academy in Oberschleißheim, Germany, and he trained there for four years.

At the age of 14, Djokovic began his tennis career on the international field when he won the European Championships in singles, doubles and team competitions.

2006: First ATP title of his career in Miami

In early 2006, Djokovic, then 19, participated in the Hopman Cup doubles event held in Perth, Australia, with his partner Ana Ivanovic and lost in the final.

After that, he continued his progress as he steadily climbed. Djokovic started 2006 ranked 78th but then cracked the top 40 thanks to reaching the quarter-finals of Roland Garros and the fourth round of Wimbledon.

Just three weeks after Wimbledon, she won her first title in Amersfoot without dropping a set and reached the top 20 for the first time in her career.

At the Indian Wells tournament held in India, Djokovic defeated Andy Murray in the semi-finals, but lost to Rafael Nadal in the final and finished runner-up.

2007: Reached first Grand Slam final

Djokovic began 2007 by defeating Australian Chris Guccione in the Adelaide final, before losing to champion Roger Federer in the fourth round of the Australian Open.

Djokovic then reached the quarter-finals of the Italian Open in Rome and lost to Nadal. He then participated in the Hamburg Masters and was eliminated by Carlos Moya.

At Roland Garros in France, one of four Grand Slam tournaments of the year, Djokovic reached the semi-finals but lost to eventual champion Nadal.

At Wimbledon in England, Djokovic advanced to the semi-finals to face Nadal but had to retire midway through the third set due to an elbow problem, after winning the first and losing the second.

At the Canadian Open in Montreal, Djokovic won the championship by defeating world No. 3 Andy Roddick in the quarterfinals, No. 2 Nadal in the semifinals and No. 1 Federer in the final.

Then at the US Open, the last Grand Slam tournament of the year held in the US, he reached the final and got off to a pretty good start with 5 set points in the first set and 2 set points in the second set but ended up losing to the champion Federer.

2007 ended for Djokovic when he won his fifth title at the BA-CA TennisTrophy in Vienna, ending the year at number 3 in the ATP rankings.

2008: Won first Grand Slam at the Australian Open.

At the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year, Djokovic reached the final without dropping a set, including a victory over defending champion Federer in the semi-finals. In the final, Djokovic defeated French player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to win the first Grand Slam title of his career. Ending the dominance of Federer or Nadal from 2005 until now.

At the Indian Wells Masters, Djokovic claimed his third career Masters title by defeating Mardy Fish in the final.

At the Italian Open in Rome, Djokovic went on to claim his fourth career Masters title by defeating Wawrinka in the final.

At the French Open, Djokovic finished third, but lost to Nadal in the semifinals in 3 sets. Djokovic arrived at Wimbledon seeded third, but lost to Safin in the second round.

At the Cincinnati Masters, Djokovic defeated Nadal in the semi-finals to advance to the final, but then lost to Murray.

In 2008, at the Beijing Olympics, Djokovic defeated James Blake to win the men’s singles bronze medal after losing to Nadal in the semi-finals.

After the Olympics, Djokovic entered the US Open as the third seed. Djokovic defeated Roddick in the quarterfinals but lost to Federer in the semifinals in 4 sets.

2019: Won seventh Australian Open and fifth Wimbledon

At the following French Open, he reached the semi-finals without dropping a set before losing to Dominic Thiem in a four-hour match, interrupted several times by rain.

2020: Won eighth Australian Open, won seventeenth Grand Slam

In early 2020, Djokovic and the Serbian national team took part in the ATP Cup in Australia. In the final against Spain, Djokovic defeated his great rival Nadal and together with Viktor Troicki won the decisive doubles match to help Serbia win the first ATP Cup in history.

He then went on to the Australian Open and successfully defended the championship after defeating Austrian player Dominic Thiem in the final. This is his eighth Australian Open win, his 17th Grand Slam title and his return to World No. 1.

2021: Wins 3 more Grand Slams and reaches 20 Grand Slams

At the Australian Open, Djokovic went on to win his 18th Grand Slam title and 9th Australian Open championship after beating Daniil Medvedev in the final.

At the French Open, Djokovic advanced to the final after eliminating Nadal in the semi-finals. Djokovic defeated Greek tennis player Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final after 5 sets to win his 19th Grand Slam title.

Coming to Wimbledon 2021, the Serbian tennis player easily overcame all his opponents to move straight into the final against Italian opponent Matteo Berrettini. Despite losing 6-7 to his opponent in the first set, Nole won the next 3 sets to win the championship. With 20 Grand Slams, Novak Djokovic has equalled Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in the number of Grand Slam titles.

2022: Banned from competing in Australia, wins Wimbledon title, wins 38th Masters and 1st ATP final

Arriving in Australia as the defending Australian Open champion, Djokovic was not allowed to compete because he had not been vaccinated as per regulations.

Djokovic entered the French Open as the defending champion, but lost to Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals and was unable to successfully defend his French Open title.

At Wimbledon 2022, Djokovic reached his 32nd Grand Slam final and then defeated Nick Kyrgios in the final to win his fourth consecutive Wimbledon trophy. This championship brought him a total of 21 Grand Slam titles, one more than Federer and one less than Nadal.

At the US Open, Djokovic withdrew from the tournament on August 25 because the US government did not allow unvaccinated non-US citizens to enter the country.

At the ATP Finals, although only ranked seventh, Djokovic won against strong opponents to enter the ATP Finals final for the eighth time. He then defeated Casper Ruud to win his 𝓈ℯ𝓍th ATP Finals title.

2023: Wins 3 more Grand Slams, reaching a record of 24 Grand Slams

2023 is a big year for Djokovic as he wins 3/4 Grand Slams of the year. He became the male tennis player with the most Grand Slam titles in history.

At the Australian Open, Djokovic dropped just one set en route to the final, where he defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas to win his tenth Australian Open title, equalling Nadal’s record of 22 GS titles.

At the French Open, Djokovic defeated world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals, then defeated Casper Ruud in the final to win his 23rd Grand Slam and become the first player to win at least 3 Grand Slam titles at each tournament.
